Creating an orb.

Firstly you will need a light source. An easy way to get started is to use some battery powered christmas tree lights which can be purchased from ebay.

Bunch all the LED’s together and you will use the supply cable to swing the lights around with.

You will need a camera capable of Bulb mode, a remote cord and a tripod. Pre focus the camera at the point where you plan to spin your orb and turn the camera into manual mode. An aperture of about f7.1 ISO of around 200 should be good.

Lock the shutter open on the camera. Now walk into the frame and start spinning the lights around to your side. Try and fix your swinging hand into your side and concentrate on a point on the floor. A good tip here is to put a coin down so as you can watch the lights passing over this.

Now once you are comfortable with the swing turn the lights on and start shuffling backwards in a circle. You will need your swinging hand to remain as the centre of the circle so you must concentrate on shuffling backwards around this point. I always find it easier to go backwards as you don’t walk into the string then.

In the picture above you can see that the hand that I swing from is close into my hip and is right at the centre of the circle. This is what you are aiming to do all the way around.

To create a full orb you only need to go around 180 deg. But if you want a fuller look then 360 deg or more can give this.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this very brief explanation of how to orb. Coming soon, how to build a more substantial orb tool.
